Chapter 676: Money
On the road were a father and daughter.
The father’s body was covered in mud and bloodstains. Beneath his feet was a raised rock, and there was a fresh, crimson wound on his forehead, as if he had hit something. The daughter was less than ten years old; she had no obvious injuries on her body, just lying on the ground unconscious.
"Neither of them is in life-threatening danger," the doctor accompanying the convoy squatted down to check them. "It should be hypoglycemia, combined with the long journey. They tripped and couldn't get back up, so they fainted."
Seeing this, Uncle Quan turned back and asked hesitantly:
"Miss, what should we do?"
"Bring them into the car," Huang Suyu paused for a moment. "Since we've seen them, there's no reason not to save them... It won't be hard for the people in the convoy to squeeze in a bit to accommodate two more. We have enough water and food; give them some sugar to replenish their energy as soon as possible."
"Alright."
Under Uncle Quan's arrangement, several bodyguards brought the father and daughter into the cars and gave them some sugar water to drink. The girl sat in the back seat with Huang Suyu and Uncle Quan, while the father, who had a head injury, was cared for by the doctor in the next car.
After settling them in, the convoy continued forward.
Not long after, the girl groaned and slowly woke up.
"Where... is this?"
"Don't worry, you're safe now..." Huang Suyu explained the situation to her gently and told her that her father was in the car behind, so she didn't need to worry.
After some questioning, the girl said they had fled from Penglai Town. On the way, they encountered an attack by a group of silver monsters. It was a tall figure carrying a military flag who appeared and held them off, giving them a chance to escape, though they had gotten separated from the others.
"Carrying a military flag...?" Hearing this description, Huang Suyu’s eyes were filled with confusion.
In this day and age, who would carry a military flag around?
"They must have encountered a possessor of some Path of the Gods on the road," Uncle Quan explained.
The girl clearly had never ridden in a car before. Now, in the back seat of this rumbling vehicle, she looked out the window with eyes full of unease:
"Big sister... where are we going now?"
"To Willow Town."
"But Daddy said we were going to the Main City. Only when we get to the Main City will we be safe."
"Willow Town is safer than the Main City."
"Then why can't everyone go to Willow Town together?" the girl asked innocently.
"Because Willow Town is too small to hold millions of people."
"Then are we going secretly while others don't know?"
Huang Suyu was stunned.
She opened her mouth to explain something, but ultimately fell silent.
In a sense, the girl was right... Although Willow Town was safe, it couldn't accommodate millions of people. In other words, the more people who knew, the less safe Willow Town would become. This was also why Huang Suyu hadn't answered truthfully when the officer questioned her at the city gate.
But at the time, Huang Suyu hadn't thought that much. After the girl's words, she suddenly realized that her subconscious psychology at the time was exactly that...
Her hands, resting on the suitcase, tightened involuntarily.
She felt she was a bit selfish.
"If... if we are going to Willow Town," the girl pursed her lips and spoke somewhat nervously, "can we take Shaojun brother and the others with us?"
"Who?"
"They're our neighbors who fled from Penglai Town with us. We were running together when we encountered the silver monsters. Later, Shaojun brother’s leg was broken by a collapsing wall, so his parents took him to rest in the house ahead. My daddy saw that my hypoglycemia was about to kick in, so he took me and ran first..."
Huang Suyu exchanged a look with Uncle Quan and asked, "Which house?"
"That one right there!"
The girl pointed toward the front windshield. In front of the convoy, the silhouette of a village loomed.
"Miss..."
"It's on the way, let's just pick them up."
Perhaps to make up for the guilt brought on by her sense of "selfishness," Huang Suyu agreed without much hesitation... She had cars, she had supplies, and she could do her best to save people within her capabilities.
Seeing this, Uncle Quan naturally wouldn't stop her. He knew his Miss's character; the only charity foundation in the entire Red Dust Main City was founded by her, and not saving someone in need wasn't her style.
The convoy slowly pulled over in front of the dim village.
Huang Suyu, Uncle Quan, and many bodyguards got out of the cars one after another, totaling more than twenty people, walking through the empty village.
The dim sky was filled with continuous light rain, and a breeze blew across the withered land, whistling through the empty buildings. A few minutes later, led by the girl, the group arrived in front of a house.
"They're inside here."
Seeing the familiar house, the girl immediately ran up, "Shaojun brother! I brought people to help you!!"
A faint scent of blood drifted into Huang Suyu’s nostrils. She was stunned for a moment, and before she could act, the bodyguards beside her suddenly moved, shielding the girl and Huang Suyu behind them.
"Miss, please step back... something isn't right," a bodyguard said in a deep voice.
Huang Suyu nodded slightly, holding the girl's hand as she retreated behind the group. As several bodyguards kicked open the door simultaneously, a thick, pungent scent of blood surged out.
The back wall of the house had been smashed to pieces by something. The wailing wind swirled within the broken wall, and three blood-soaked corpses were laid out inside—a shocking sight.
"Shaojun brother..." the girl stood frozen in place.
Huang Suyu’s heart also skipped a beat. She subconsciously covered the girl's eyes, her expression incredibly complex.
Several bodyguards walked up, first testing the breath of the two adults, then looked at each other and shook their heads helplessly... But when they walked toward the last child, a flash of surprise suddenly crossed their eyes:
"Miss, both adults are gone, but the child is still alive!"
Light returned to Huang Suyu’s dim eyes!
"Quick! Quick, find a way to save him! Where's the doctor? Where is the doctor??"
Urged by Huang Suyu, the team doctor stepped forward quickly. After a careful examination, his brows furrowed tightly.
"How is it?"
"This child is lucky. His heart is naturally shifted to the left, so even though his chest was pierced, it wasn't fatal... But he has lost too much blood, and the wound is already infected. If we don't treat him now, it will be too late."
"Then what are we waiting for?"
"Miss, I need blood bags for intravenous injection... and antibiotics, anesthesia, disinfectant, and surgical instruments..."
"Uncle Quan, give him the supplies," Huang Suyu turned to look at Uncle Quan.
Uncle Quan opened his mouth, then shook his head helplessly:
"Miss, our convoy doesn't have blood bags..."
"Then what about antibiotics?!"
"None of those either."
"Anesthesia and surgical instruments??"
"...None of those either."
"Damn it, then what do we have!!??" Huang Suyu watched as the child was about to die before her eyes, her heart filled with anxiety.
Uncle Quan was silent for a long time, then spoke bitterly:
"Money... Miss, we only have money."
Huang Suyu stood frozen in place.
