Chapter 240: Stepping Into Your Role
On the deserted night street, a short, dark figure was running blindly.
The mist exhaled from his lungs dissipated into the cold night. Except for when the Third District was destroyed, Old Man Ding had never run this hard in his life. His feet, which had never done heavy labor, felt like they were filled with lead and wouldn't listen to him at all.
"Ghost... there’s a ghost!" Old Man Ding muttered weakly as he ran.
He didn't know the roads of Aurora City, so he could only dart through the alleys like a headless fly. His brain was a mess, and he didn't know where to run, only thinking about escaping that ghost with all his might, the further the better.
Even now, he didn't dare to look back, fearing that if he did, Fang Lichang’s face would appear behind him.
Finally, Old Man Ding couldn't run anymore.
He sat down weakly against a wall, sweating like rain. He held his breath and looked back cautiously. There were no traces of anyone on the empty street, and he finally breathed a long sigh of relief...
"If I had known I’d run into such an eerie thing, I wouldn't have testified for him even if it killed me!" Old Man Ding cursed to himself.
But when his gaze swept over the ordinary, low residential buildings around him and saw that luxurious hotel standing in the center of the city again, greed and desire overcame his temporary fear in his narrow eyes.
"Still, I’m lucky to be alive... the fortune ahead must be quite something."
Old Man Ding stood up slowly. Just then, a figure in a black trench coat swept across the street and quickly arrived in front of him.
"Old Man Ding, why are you here? Where are the others?"
The moment he saw that face, Old Man Ding’s expression changed drastically. He sat down on the ground with a thud, his face deathly pale!
"Old Man Ding, what are you doing?" Fang Lichang frowned. "I’m asking you a question!"
"Who... who... who are you exactly??"
Old Man Ding was completely stunned. He had just escaped from the hotel, and now he had run into this demonic face again... Despair was undisguised in his eyes.
Seeing this, Fang Lichang walked straight up, grabbed him by the collar, lifted him up, and slapped Old Man Ding across the face with a crisp sound.
"Wake up! I am Prosecutor Fang Lichang! I’m asking you, what exactly happened in the hotel just now??" Fang Lichang’s tone was extremely serious.
This slap cleared Old Man Ding’s head a little. He stared blankly at the Fang Lichang in front of him, suddenly feeling that the other’s tone and expression seemed different from the one in the hotel just now... The one in front of him was more like the Prosecutor he remembered.
"Are you really the Prosecutor?" Old Man Ding asked tentatively. "You haven't been possessed by a ghost?"
"What possession? What are you talking about?"
Hearing this, Old Man Ding finally confirmed his judgment. He almost cried while hugging Fang Lichang on the spot, and hurriedly recounted everything that had happened in the hotel. As Fang Lichang listened to Old Man Ding’s description, his expression grew uglier.
"What [Spade 6]? Just a rat playing god." Fang Lichang snorted coldly. "I chased after him for a long time just now and didn't see his shadow, so I figured it was a diversion... It seems that was indeed the case."
"Then, then where is he now..."
"Don't worry, as long as you stay by my side, he won't dare to do anything to you."
Old Man Ding immediately felt reassured. With this official protecting him, the fear in his heart had dissipated by more than half. He leaned close to Fang Lichang, a fawning smile on his face.
"Alright, alright, the Prosecutor is wise and powerful! In front of you, that Spade wouldn't even dare to fart."
"Follow me. Before the trial, I’ll take you to a safe place first."
Fang Lichang turned and walked toward the end of the alley. Old Man Ding followed hurriedly, fearing he would be left behind.
The two walked for a long time until they finally arrived in front of an abandoned warehouse. The dim warehouse stood in a neglected corner, several kilometers away from the nearest street. Old Man Ding asked suspiciously:
"Sir, this... is this the safe place you mentioned?"
Having just stayed at the luxurious Meli Hotel, and now suddenly arriving in front of an abandoned warehouse... this huge contrast made Old Man Ding feel very uncomfortable, and his brows were tightly knit.
"The Meli Hotel is too high-profile, so we’ll be watched. This place is remote and absolutely safe."
"This... sigh." Old Man Ding struggled for a long time, feeling that the Prosecutor made sense. Just as he was about to agree, he heard a series of smacking sounds from the side.
In the dim, deathly wilderness, Fang Lichang suddenly began to move his mouth continuously, as if something was about to crawl out from inside. His tongue kept sucking at his teeth, making strange noises.
"Sir, what’s wrong with you?"
"Nothing... just suddenly felt like there was something in my mouth." Fang Lichang turned around, his expression somewhat uncomfortable. "Help me take a look."
Old Man Ding leaned his face in front of Fang Lichang’s mouth, barely looking inside by the dim moonlight.
As the mouth moved continuously, something stuck to the scarlet tongue tip, and like a snake, it suddenly extended out...
It was a [Spade 6].
The moment he saw this playing card, Old Man Ding felt a thunderclap roar in his mind. He looked up slowly, stiff and bewildered.
Under the pale moonlight, an exaggerated and eerie smile gradually curled on "Fang Lichang’s" face:
"Guess... who am I?"
"Ah... AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!"
Old Man Ding screamed until he almost lost his voice. There was no blood left on his face. At this moment, he had the illusion that his brain marrow was being boiled by fear... His last shred of sanity was completely shattered by that smile.
Old Man Ding struggled to move his trembling legs, turned around, and ran wildly into the distance. He didn't know what to do anymore; the only thought in his mind was to get as far away from that monster as possible!
As Old Man Ding ran away, an invisible python slid off "Fang Lichang’s" body, nimbly and agilely climbing onto Old Man Ding’s neck, greedily sucking.
Under the pale moonlight, Chen Ling took the [Spade 6] off his tongue tip, gave it a light flick, turned it back into a piece of chewing gum, put it back in his mouth, and chewed it leisurely.
"Run, fear... step into your role."
"We have plenty of time... to complete this performance together."
Chen Ling tucked his hands in his pockets, chewing gum, and followed Old Man Ding in an unhurried manner.
