Chapter 1780: Lin Xi
On the empty street, two figures walked slowly out of the grocery store.
"In the end, that old man still wouldn't say what the big mission is," Li Shangfeng clicked his tongue. "Being all secretive, what's that about?"
"The bigger the mission, the stricter the confidentiality. That's normal," Lin Xi responded calmly. "We are both newcomers. Since the Gray King didn't tell us clearly when assigning the mission, Old Fan, as a regular contact, naturally wouldn't reveal it easily..."
"Then how do we know when to do what?"
"Didn't Old Fan say? First, lie low in Ruoshui Prison and wait for the Gray King’s instructions."
"Tsk..."
Li Shangfeng was a bit helpless. This wasn't quite the mission he had imagined... Lying low was the most troublesome thing, and he didn't know when it would end.
The Twilight Society couldn't possibly have him lying low for a year or a half, could they?
"Hey, Club 8, how do you plan to lie low?" Li Shangfeng turned his head to look at Lin Xi.
Lin Xi pondered for a moment. "The Gray King has already arranged legal identities for us. Next, it's just a matter of finding a place with frequent information flow and a mix of people... where we can collect some intelligence ourselves and use the dense crowd to make ourselves less conspicuous."
"Fine, then I'll go with you."
"?" Lin Xi looked at him strangely. "Why are you following me?"
"My brain is slow, and I'm worst at lying low. You look smart, so following you will save me a lot of trouble," Li Shangfeng grinned. "Besides, we're both newcomers, isn't helping each other what we should do?"
Lin Xi looked up and down at this seemingly carefree young man, appearing a bit disgusted... But he was right. Since this mission was major, it must be dangerous, and newcomers helping each other was always better.
Lin Xi was about to say something when a figure in a Chengtian Prefecture uniform walked straight toward them from the roadside.
Seeing someone from the Chengtian Prefecture, Li Shangfeng and Lin Xi both tightened up!
What’s going on?
Just arrived at Ruoshui Prison and already discovered?!
Li Shangfeng and Lin Xi looked at each other. Although they had never worked together before, this one look was full of tacit understanding. Li Shangfeng silently put his hands behind his back, and a gun barrel equipped with a silencer was silently revealed... Lin Xi grabbed the paintbrush in his pocket, ready to obscure the surrounding environment and run away immediately after killing.
Just as the two were tense, the person from the Chengtian Prefecture smiled at them and handed out a flyer:
"Hello."
"This is the Ruoshui Prison Safety Prevention Publicity Committee. Learn about emergency evacuation knowledge!"
After handing a flyer to Li Shangfeng and Lin Xi respectively, he continued along the street without looking back, leaving the two stunned figures standing in place like statues.
After a long time, Li Shangfeng looked at the flyer in his hand with a strange expression...
"...What the hell is this?"
"Has Ruoshui Prison’s safety education reached this point?" Lin Xi flipped through the beautifully crafted flyer in his hand, looking extremely surprised.
Besides using comics to output a lot of emergency escape matters, it also marked the emergency evacuation points for corresponding blocks. At the bottom of the flyer, it even listed a series of public welfare lectures on safety awareness to be held this week... They were basically every day, and they gave away eggs just for attending.
"I heard that Ruoshui Prison has occasionally had disaster attacks recently... Is it because of this?" Li Shangfeng asked, confused.
"Possibly." Lin Xi nodded slightly, as if he had discovered something. "However, it shouldn't just be because of recent events... Look, these lectures have been going on for hundreds of sessions. They have been doing this kind of publicity for at least two years."
"But this is also quite strange. I lived in the Chengtian Boundary for so many years and never heard of any disaster attacks."
"None?" Lin Xi looked at him. "Nine years ago, wasn't there a world-ending disaster that attacked the Chengtian Boundary... and wiped out an entire Xuanwu Avenue?"
"Uh... that doesn't count."
Li Shangfeng’s expression suddenly became subtle.
Lin Xi didn't notice his strangeness, just lowered his head and pondered for a moment before saying:
"Then let's go to the central square first... I see there are several cafes there, we should be able to hear a lot of news."
"Okay."
Li Shangfeng followed Lin Xi straight toward the central square.
"By the way, Club 8... how much do you know about that Red King?" Li Shangfeng asked tentatively.
"Red King?" Lin Xi was stunned. "Know nothing at all? I just heard he founded the Twilight Society and is very powerful, but he hasn't shown his face for many years..."
"What about his identity... or something?"
"Identity? What identity?"
"Nothing..." Li Shangfeng hesitated for a moment. "Then how did you join the Twilight Society?"
Lin Xi fell silent. He seemed to be lost in some memory, and after a long time, he spoke with complex emotions: "A lot of things happened... I just feel like there’s a force in the dark guiding me to join here."
Lin Xi opened his mouth and still said a strange thing:
"Sometimes I always feel... there is another me beside me... or, a group of people? I can't quite explain it... But regardless, I am grateful to fate for helping me get through the difficulties."
"Perhaps joining the Twilight Society is also a matter of fate."
Li Shangfeng’s eyebrows arched slightly.
As expected.
The other members don't know about what happened in the previous world... nor do they know who the Red King really is.
Li Shangfeng had come into contact with Chen Ling nine years ago and witnessed too many things, so the Gray King, following Chen Ling's instructions, answered all his questions... Not every member knows about the existence of the ghost members from the previous world; they simply attribute everything to a strange twist of fate.
Li Shangfeng naturally wouldn't say anything unnecessary; he just nodded:
"I see."
The two chatted idly as they arrived at the perimeter of the central square.
Li Shangfeng found this young man very interesting and was stunned by his talent. His expectations for the Twilight Society grew higher and higher... If the members of the Twilight Society were all geniuses like this, he couldn't even imagine what earth-shattering things they might accomplish.
The two found a cafe and sat down, staying from dawn until dusk, ears pricked, listening to the conversations of table after table of guests around them.
"Hey, did your kid go to the Red Dust Prison for an exchange program recently? Haven't they come back yet?"
"Not yet... They just sent a telegram a few days ago saying a brilliant professor came to the Chengtian Realm, and since it's a rare opportunity, the exchange period has been extended."
