Chapter 1589: Completely Random?
Burning steel fell from the sky like meteors with a roar.
Each meteor was a piece of missile wreckage, and the firelight in the distance that illuminated the sky red signaled that the surrounding military districts had been wiped out by the white-clad figure’s wave of a hand... Those figures were instantly buried in a sea of fire, without even a chance to wail or struggle.
How many American troops were stationed in those places? Thousands? Tens of thousands?
Yang Xiao didn't know, and he didn't want to know.
At this moment, his attention was entirely focused on the Army Laboratory below.
Dr. Wayne watched with his own eyes as the officer who had been yelling at him just a moment ago was shot in the head, then fell heavily to the ground with eyes wide in disbelief...
He was stunned. It wasn't that he wasn't afraid, but seeing this extremely distorted scene, he subconsciously thought he was dreaming.
This world wasn't some damn sci-fi movie; how could there really be such a superman-like existence??
Every bullet that tore through the air seemed to be guided, precisely shooting into the bodies of every military figure... but all the disheveled and terrified experimental personnel who fell to the ground were unharmed.
Steel and fire became the main theme of this former sanctuary of scientific research, and the culprit who caused it all slowly floated down from mid-air...
He raised his hand gently, and a broken steel bar nearby bound a research staff member who had collapsed in fear, lifting him directly from the ground into mid-air.
The English, mixed with a distinct Eastern accent, sounded like a devil’s whisper once again:
“Where is the person... who made the Otherworld Tail Wave missile?!”
It was a black scientist wearing glasses. He screamed in terror, and upon hearing Yang Xiao’s questioning, he immediately grabbed onto it like a straw:
“It’s... it’s Dr. Wayne!!”
“Please, please don’t kill me...”
Tears gushed wildly from the black scientist’s eyes. He looked at Yang Xiao, begging and repeating this sentence, fearing that the piece of steel bar in front of him would turn into a weapon to pierce his skull in the next second.
Although the languages were different, everyone’s reaction before death was the most authentic. Yang Xiao controlled himself not to look at his pleading eyes, because that would make him feel like he really was a monster.
He threw the black scientist aside and looked around with pupils surging with auroras:
“Who is Wayne?”
Everyone’s gaze turned toward a figure also wearing a research coat.
Yang Xiao’s gaze followed... It was an unremarkable white man. Beside him lay an officer who had died with his eyes wide open. Scarlet blood stained half of his research coat and left a shocking patch of black on his slightly messy hair.
It was clear that Dr. Wayne was a bit afraid, but he still tried his best to calm down, taking off his glasses with trembling hands and wiping the blood off with the corner of his coat...
When he looked up again, the god-like figure had already floated in front of him.
“It’s me, I am Boileau Wayne,” Wayne said hoarsely.
Yang Xiao’s pupils, surging with auroras, stared quietly at Wayne. For some reason, he always felt that the face in front of him was somewhat familiar...
“Have I seen you before?”
“Looking at the pattern on your research suit, you should be a researcher at the Sub-Magnetic Research Institute?” Wayne glanced at the pattern on the edge of Yang Xiao’s chest pocket, his aged voice sounding slowly.
“You might have participated in some world-class scientific activities. Three years ago, at the World Science Forum held in Budapest, Hungary, I was one of the invited experts...”
Yang Xiao remembered.
He had indeed participated in the World Science Forum that year, but at the time, he was just a newcomer in the academic world who buried his head in research projects. It stood to reason that he didn't even have the qualifications to attend this forum... It was his mentor who brought him along when he attended, and that was the closest he had ever been to world-leading science.
The scientist he could once only look up to was now appearing before his eyes again in this form... This made Yang Xiao’s gaze somewhat complex.
“I remember now... I have a deep impression of your speech that time.”
“You said that modern civilization is a civilization of science, a civilization without borders; it belongs to all humanity and should benefit all humanity...”
“But what about now? You are working for the American government, turning human science into a tool for killing.”
“You are too naive... Science is pure, but humans are not,” Wayne shook his head.
“You should realize that when value becomes the standard for measuring everything, no matter how lofty science is, it is just a tool to satisfy human nature... Science that cannot create profit doesn't even have the value of being born.”
Dr. Wayne had calmed down by now. Instead, he began to size up the Eastern youth in front of him, his eyes flashing with indescribable amazement:
“Aren’t you a tool, too?”
“I’m just curious, what exactly did they do to you to give you such powerful strength? You... should be their most powerful weapon, right?”
Yang Xiao’s expression sank. “You’re wrong. I am not a tool, and even less a weapon used for slaughter!”
“Then why did you come?”
“For humanity.”
Wayne was stunned, and then he actually started to laugh.
“What are you laughing at?” Yang Xiao’s brows furrowed tighter and tighter.
“You, an Easterner, crossed continents and oceans to come here, destroyed the top research institute in the United States, and blew up so many military bases... You tell me this is for humanity?”
“No matter what you think, I know what my purpose is!”
Yang Xiao didn't want to waste any more breath on this person. He raised his hand, and a steel bar directly pierced Dr. Wayne’s shoulder, pinning him to the wall behind him!
A scarlet flower bloomed again on Dr. Wayne’s research coat. He grabbed the steel bar in pain, letting out bursts of wails.
“Tell me, where is the detailed data for the nuclear weapon you dropped on Wushan Town? What was the frequency band you used to open the Otherworld space? How can I replicate the same location?!” Yang Xiao’s voice was as cold as frost.
A flash of bewilderment crossed Dr. Wayne’s face, which was distorted by extreme pain. He stared blankly at Yang Xiao’s incredibly serious eyes, as if realizing something, and the corners of his pale mouth twisted into an expression that was neither a smile nor a cry.
Yang Xiao raised his hand, and another steel bar flew in front of Dr. Wayne. As long as Yang Xiao’s thoughts shifted, he could pierce his pupils.
Dr. Wayne endured the pain and said hoarsely:
“Frequency band... what frequency band?!”
“All the data we collected about that world is constantly changing! What do you think it is? A door that can be opened at a fixed point with a password? With our current technology, it’s impossible to do at all!”
“All missiles carrying Otherworld Tail Waves open channels that are random! Completely random! Do you understand??”
“Every millimeter the explosion position deviates! Every millisecond it is delayed! The connection location is completely different!”
